'The defendant had these children terrorised. They were afraid of him.'
A man who slapped his 11-month-old daughter because she moved as he changed her nappy was jailed on Friday.
He admitted carrying out the assaults on his children over a five year period starting in January 2014. One of his sons was aged four when he was first attacked by his father and the second son was aged six when he was first assaulted. Their father wouldn’t allow the boys to go out to play and he wouldn’t allow them to play in their home nor would he allow his sons to have birthday parties in their home.“Their father was always aggressive towards them and things only became happier after he moved out of the family home”, she added.
On one occasions one of her sons had a handprint on his face after he’d been struck by his father. She said on another occasion as the two boys crawled away from their father when he entered the room “he kicked them when he was wearing military boots”. The mother also told the police about her ex-husband slapping their eleven month old daughter.
A defence barrister said “nothing can be said to mitigate the seriousness of the offending nor to mitigate the lasting effect this has had on the victims”. He said the defendant, who pleaded guilty to the offences, had no previous criminal convictions. He has been assessed as presenting a low likelihood of re-offending and has had no contact with his children since 2019 “as a result of his actions”.
