Ten Hag will no doubt want the best possible option in his side for the coming matches, though the fact that any new left-back signing could lose their place as soon as Shaw is back gives reason to sign a lower-quality option who does not expect a long-term role. The 24-year-old started well as a combative option on the left side of defence, but his arrival would once again bring out the best in Shaw, just as Telles had done two years previous.
Yet, a year after his arrival, he is now firmly behind Shaw in the left-back pecking order and could drop even further if the club indeed proceeds with a move for a top target like Marc Cucurella or Nicolás Tagliafico this week.
