Man Utd signed Sofyan Amrabat on loan on deadline can and have handed the midfielder the No 4 shirt as he looks to make sure the option on a permanent deal is taken up.
In an ideal world, Manchester United would have probably brought Sofyan Amrabat in and sold Scott McTominay this summer, but circumstances never quite aligned to make the transaction as smooth as that.
But a pre-season tour injury to promising youngster Kobbie Mainoo pushed United further down the road of keeping McTominay, while interest in the Scot never materialised as strongly as might have been expected. David Moyes and Thomas Tuchel are admirers, but neither West Ham nor Bayern Munich pushed for a transfer.Not only did McTominay end up staying, but so did Van de Beek.
It means the 27-year-old has one season to earn an extended stay at United, with his Fiorentina contract set to expire next summer. United have an option to make the move permanent for €20million, plus €5million in add-ons. "We know that Sofyan’s mentality, dynamism and technical qualities will help the squad as we look to achieve success in all competitions this season."
It seems pretty clear that only one of Amrabat and McTominay will survive at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season. It's not inconceivable they both leave if the former doesn't do enough to impress.
