Benjamin Fitzsimmons attacked the pensioner with a knife after he heard him singing outside his house
A convicted rapist slashed an elderly man's face after he walked past his house singing on the way home from the pub.
He was arrested and released under investigation. But police were called again just three weeks later when he went into a drunken rage and headbutted a woman outside Croxteth Family Health Centre, before going into the Lobster Hotel pub on Moss Way and stabbing landlord Peter Lanes.READ MORE: The 'tried and tested' 29p weed killer gardeners say will clear patios in 'two days'
Defence counsel Frank Dylan said Fitzsimmons, who has 37 previous convictions for over 100 offences including rape and robbery, had recently relapsed into heavy drinking after he "achieved pariah status in his community" due to being arrested in connection with a friend's murder. His name was cleared in relation to this matter and he was released, but rumours about him continued.
Judge Garrett Byrne, sentencing, said; "On May 31 you attacked Ronald Morris with a knife. He was 67-years-old at the time and he was walking home at 11.30pm after being out drinking, and he was singing. He was unlucky enough to walk past your house and you saw him, you armed yourself with a knife and viciously attacked him, cutting him to the face and then cutting him to the head. Photographs of the injuries show the extent of the harm caused and they are shocking.
