Man died following punch after gesturing for stranger to walk past him to maintain social distancing, trial hears
A man who died following an alleged punch had stopped and gestured for a stranger to walk past him to 'maintain social distancing', a trial has heard.
Mr Shepherd was then seen on CCTV footage walking away from Mr Henderson ‘seemingly without looking’ at him as he lay unconscious on the ground, prosecutors said.Mr Shepherd, of Bramhall, has pleaded not guilty to an offence of manslaughter and is on trial at Minshull Street Crown Court. Efforts were made by Greater Manchester Police to find the suspect, and, using CCTV from around the area, they were able to piece together the movements of Mr Shepherd, Mr Kellet said.
“The suspect and Mr Henderson continued along Wilmslow Road, coming back into view 7 seconds later at 17:09:29. By this time, Mr Henderson was ahead of the suspect. The suspect punched Mr Henderson and at 17:09:34 Mr Henderson fell to the floor hitting his head.” On December 6 last year, Mr Shepherd provided a defence case statement, in which he accepted he punched Mr Henderson, but said he was acting in ‘lawful self defence’, prosecutors said.
In a statement read to the court, Mr Henderson’s daughter said: “At the beginning of August of last year, my father moved into a flat in Rusholme. Mr dad was very happy and his overall health was fair, he was coping and physically he was on heart medication and blood thinners following a heart attack in 2010.
