Newcastle arrived with hope against a wounded Manchester City but the Blues ended a big week with another important win
Manchester City only took three points from their fixture with Newcastle, but given the circumstances it felt more than that. Eddie Howe's side arrived with their best chance in years of winning at the Etihad for the first time, and left as pointless as any previous side.
When you've won the Treble, it turns out that is still quite a lot. A rowdy full house packed in to see their team show exactly why they have had so much success. Josko Gvardiol occasionally popped up alongside Rodri as a No.6, Manu Akanji charged forward from centre-back into the No.8 role, and Phil Foden joined Julian Alvarez and Mateo Kovacic in the middle. The changes were so fluid it was difficult to know what was permanent, and it took the Newcastle analysts 15 minutes to be able to say confidently that City had basically left the entire right flank to Kyle Walker.
It was no surprise that these three were involved for the opener half an hour in, the Croatian breaking the Newcastle lines to find Foden before a disguised pass into Alvarez and an unstoppable effort past Nick Pope. If it had taken them some time to get going, that goal was worth the wait. Whether it was an act of defiance not to use any substitutes or a reflection of the players that were on his bench, Guardiola conducted this match in textbook fashion: a tactical surprise, followed by asking for all 11 starters to run themselves into the ground despite their mammoth contributions in Athens mere days earlier.
