'We understand the reasons we have been able to get him, and I suppose some people will say we are taking a gamble, but he is a £20m-rated player.'

In recent years, Man City supporters have become accustomed to seeing their side sign some of the most exciting players in world football. There is no better place for a budding young footballer to ply their trade in the modern game than the Etihad Stadium, but that wasn't always the case.

Jo started his senior professional career at Brazilian giants Corinthians before making a move to Europe with Russian side CSKA Moscow two years later. It was in Russia that he enjoyed the most successful scoring period of his entire career, netting an impressive 44 goals in just 77 appearances for the club, including two goals against Inter Milan in the Champions League.

"So with the success he's had, I think it's a real coup that we've been able to bring him to the club. He is a big guy, in stature and in ability, so I think everybody will enjoy watching him play." Yet, less than two months after he joined the club, it would change forever when the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment completed their takeover.

City failed to win any of their next three league matches with Jo in the starting lineup but returned to winning ways when he dropped out of the squad entirely against Stoke. The star striker managed just one goal across his first nine Premier League appearances, and club coaches were concerned by his struggle to cope with the physical demands placed upon him.

Jo completed a deadline-day loan move to Goodison Park, which would prove to be a lot more beneficial for him, scoring five goals in 12 appearances for Moyes' side. "At the moment, it might change in the future, but at the moment, it is. Jo went back to Brazil without permission from the football club. He is now back but is suspended at the present time," Moyes confirmed.

“I put the drink first, because it takes you to other situations,” Jo revealed in 2016. "For example, I could get a drink here at home, or two, or three, with my wife and friends. Thankfully, this dark period of his life is behind him now, with Jo labelling himself '100 per cent improved' since he gave up alcohol altogether.

Jo struggled for consistency but netted goals in cup competitions against Salzburg and West Bromwich Albion, as well as a memorable goal against Juventus in the Europa League.
