Fire crews have been battling the blaze
Dramatic footage of a blaze that tore through a tanker on the M1 near Nottinghamshire has been captured by a passing motorist. The fire, which happened on Tuesday morning, forced the closure of the motorway in both directions between junctions 28 and 29 near Mansfield and Chesterfield.
It caused a large plume of black smoke over the area, which could be seen for tens of miles. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service urged nearby residents to close their doors and windows."We currently have four fire engines, two water carriers & a foam unit dealing with a vehicle fire on the M1 southbound between J29 & J28," they said in a statement.
In an update at 12.47am, National Highways said: "The M1 remains CLOSED in both directions between J29 and J28 near #Mansfield due to a tanker vehicle fire. DerbyshireFRS are continuing to extinguish the fire.
