The senior doctor who first raised concerns about Lucy Letby said senior managers were more concerned with protection their reputation that investigating his concerns
Lucy Letby was initially arrested in July 2018 as part of a major police inquiry into the deaths of 17 babies at the hospital Hospital managers must be regulated in the same way as doctors and nurses, the consultant who first raised concerns aboutSpeaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, Dr Stephen Brearey said there was “no apparent accountability” for managers’ actions within NHS trusts.
Letby was handed a whole life sentence on Monday for her crimes, which included the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others. Dr Brearey first raised concerns about Letby’s association with the deaths in June 2015 and has previously said more deaths could have been avoided from as early as February 2016 if executives had “responded appropriately” to an urgent meeting request from concerned doctors.Dr Brearey said today that senior executives made the lives of him and his colleagues difficult instead of listening to their concerns.
He added: “Our experiences aren’t uncommon in the NHS. You go to senior colleagues with a problem and you come away confused and anxious because the problem in being turned in a way that you realise they’re starting to see you as a problem.”t within the NHS unless whistleblowers are listened to and their concerns acted on.
