Lucy Letby accused of murdering seven babies was 'poisoner at work' in neonatal unit, trial hears
A neonatal nurse was a ‘poisoner at work’ resulting in a significant rise in the collapses and deaths of babies, a trial has heard.
“Prior to January 2015, the statistics in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester for the mortality of the babies in the UK were comparable to other like units,” Mr Johnson KC said. The consultants searched for a cause, but noticed they all had one ‘common denominator’, namely the presence of one neonatal nurse, which was alleged to be Ms Letby.
“Many of the events in this case occurred on the night shifts. When Lucy Letby was moved onto the day shifts, the collapses and deaths moved to the day shifts,” he alleged. “The prosecution say that the only reasonable conclusion to be drawn from the evidence you will hear is that somebody poisoned these babies deliberately with insulin. This was no accident.”
The prosecutor said that the two children poisoned with insulin, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were two baby boys. The first was born in summer 2015 and the other was born in spring 2016. Both were poisoned a couple of days after they were born, the court heard.
