A convoy of decorated Manchester taxis would drive children with disabilities to the seaside for a special day out
A much loved annual event saw convoys of decorated taxis take hundreds of children to the seaside for free.
The trips took place every summer and were dubbed the annual 'convoy of happiness'. The Manchester Evening News reported on one particularly memorable event in June 1984. Elsewhere among the multicoloured cabs was Orville the Duck, Tweety Pie, a Viking, a Roman soldier as well as many other characters making it a memorable day for everyone.
Along with rising insurance costs and increasing red tape, the decision was made to bring the tradition to a close after more than 50-years. The end of the Manchester taxi convoy followed the ending of similar events in Trafford and Salford. In 2017, the M.E.N. reported on Salford's own 'convoy of happiness', which saw hundreds of disabled youngsters taken to Southport every year.
