Regulars say they can't understand why the Jolly Sailor in Waterfoot is not profitable
Residents have voiced their sadness at the proposed conversion of a pub which has served the community for 150 years.
By closing the Jolly Sailor and converting it to flats it is hoped that no longer having two pubs in such close proximity will turn the other pub into a "successful and profitable business". In documents submitted with the application Helen Rawstron states: "The Jolly Sailor – along with scores of others in the Valley which have closed – has not been viable as a commercial enterprise and as such has closed.
"I have been a regular customer of the Jolly Sailor and The Boot and Shoe for over 30 years and both pubs have traded well together. I feel that whilst the current owner has tried over the last 5 years to give someone the chance to make it successful, maybe instead of converting to flats, there should have been an opportunity for either the community or others to buy this and keep it as a public house.
