'This is a box office set of local elections.' After 15 hours of voting, polls have closed in local elections across much of England. Sky's BethRigby has all the details on how things look set to unfold this evening. Latest updates: 📺 Sky 501

The Tories are resigned to a dire night ahead, while the mood in the Labour camp is buoyantWith seven out of 10 people in England eligible to vote, this is the biggest electoral test before the general election.

The other is whether the Liberal Democrats can smash the Tories' blue wall in the leafy shires of Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey. He'll need a swing of 11.8%. Will these results show he's heading in that direction? To show he's on the right course he'll want to show a double-digit lead. I'm also told they are going well in Michael Gove's Surrey Heath, and Esher & Walton - Dominic Raab's constituency and a key election target for Sir Ed Davey's Lib Dems.

One strategist tells me that by the morning they think they will be able to argue that the party is on its way to forming the next government and that this is by far the best performance since Sir Keir became leader in 2020. The results will supply vital clues about whether Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party are on track to end 13 years of Conservative governments, or whether they will miss out again.

"Confidence in the overall picture, however, should not overlook other impacts which can only be revealed through detailed data collection and analysis over the coming weeks. "Given the fundamental role played by electoral administrators, it will also be vital that we hear from them about their experiences of the day, as well as other participants in the elections, including candidates."Understanding the context of four years ago, when most of these seats were last contested, should help us to follow the council results as they are declared. It wasn't Labour that inflicted such terrible losses - in fact, Labour lost seats and councils too.
