“The trouble with Truss is there was quite a lot of hype about the Thatcherite rebirth, and then the public saw her and said, God is that all there is?” Tobias Ellwood, chair of the Commons defence committee, warned that the Prime Minister would need to rebuild her authority. He told TalkTV: “No leader can call for unity, it doesn’t come on its own. You need to present that vision which everyone understands, everyone supports, and then is willing to defend – especially when you need to find that centre ground that all allows all wings to lean in to and indeed support.
