This week in Birmingham, amid the Tory mutiny and infighting, senior figures in the GovernmentAgainst a backdrop of financial and political turmoil – much of it triggered by the PM and her Chancellor – the Government looked dysfunctional, with. This was the most anarchic conference by a governing party for decades, far worse than tensions in the mid-noughties during those Blair-Brown clashes.
However, despite the self-inflicted wounds, the Prime Minister has two factors in her favour. First, her colleagues don’t yet have the energy or emotional resilience to force a new leadership election, five weeks after the last one. Second, a general election any time soon would be a bloodbath for the Conservatives. Plenty of Tory MPs have mortgages too, and their payments aren’t getting smaller.
