One audience member asked Sunak how he expected to unite the party when he had 'stabbed Boris Johnson in the back'
The first hour consisted of the well-rehearsed introductory speeches – with David Davis praising Rishi Sunak and James Cleverly fawning over Liz Truss – before the audience was then made to watch polished video clips of the candidates doing a lot of slo-motion handshaking with softly-spoken voiceovers.
Viewers had to wait until the second half of the evening to hear anything interesting. As is always the case with live audience questioning, the candidates were hit with an array of policy themes and uncomfortable topics.Mr Sunak was grilled on everything from the protection of greyhounds and relocating the House of Lords to whether he would welcome former Tory leader William Hague back into the political fold as an advisor.
