There hasn’t been one second of intellectual reckoning, not one scintilla of honest self-appraisal, or even the pretence of genuine introspection.comment pages yesterday to reduce himself to the status of a child. It was a prolonged tantrum in human form, a protracted squeal about how life isn’t fair and he should damn well be able to eat Mars bars for dinner if he wants to.
His inadequacies are so great they are logically entailed by virtue of his own arguments. He is like the Cogito Ergo Sum of political amateurism – a perfect proposition which provides its own conclusion by means of its premises. He negotiated the Brexit deal he now brands disastrous. He demands the extraction of the European Court of Justice from the Northern Ireland Protocol despite never mentioning it as a significant concern at the time.
Nothing learned and nothing gained. In every case, the same mental process is taking place, right out there in the open. Not a batsqueak of genuine appraisal. Not even a hint of people acknowledging reality and altering their ideas in the face of it. It’s not even really a political process at this point. It’s pure psychology. The sight of people who cannot allow themselves to ever acknowledge that they were wrong, blocking off any thoughts that it might indeed be the case.
It’s old-fashioned in a number of respects. The slasher genre obviously reminds you of the 80s. But really it goes further than that, right into Hitchcock territory, with one clever element – her deafness – providing the rationale for a tight 81 minutes of suspense. There’s not one wasted minute in it. It’s stripped down, highly effective, hair-raising stuff from start to finish.The first album by the criminally underrated indie group has been playing in my flat all week.
