European clubs are reportedly wanting FIFA to introduce new regulation to protect the transfer market

A number of European clubs, including Liverpool, have held talks over pushing FIFA to establish regulation that would ensure that they get their money from deals that saw players leave for Saudi Arabia.

The flurry of transfer activity has seen more than £750m spent by Saudi clubs over the course of the summer, with the Saudi government wanting to raise the standard of the SPL to one of the world’s biggest leagues over time, a move that forms part of a wider plan to use the power of football to diversify revenue streams away from traditional oil and gas and help shape the worldview of Saudi.

The Saudi transfer window was active for seven days following the close of the European summer window at the start of this month, with Liverpool’s talismanic Mohamed Salah the subject of a £150m bid from Al-Ittihad that was rejected by the Reds, with the SPL side having been tipped to come back in with an even bigger offer before the window closed on September 7.

With so many players having been sold to Saudi clubs there is now a considerable amount of money that will flow back into the selling clubs over time, with some instalments already having been paid to clubs.
