India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft becomes the first ever to land on the moon's south pole, just days after a Russian attempt ended in a crash. The region's shadowed craters are believed to contain water ice that could help make a permanent lunar base for humans a reality.
NASA, UK Space Agency congratulate Indian counterpart
"India has been a player in space for a considerable time, but this totally cements its position," he says. During the fortnight, it will run a series of experiments to determine the mineral composition of the lunar surface. "This is a feature of the shine of India - we made a promise and we made it true on the surface of the moon."
Six weeks after it launched, and three days after a similar Russian attempt crashed into the lunar surface, it's touched down in an area thought to be rich with water ice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined a conference call at the space centre to watch along with them.
