Live as Leeds woman Kirstie Ellis' murderer Tony Brooks finds out his sentence
in Stanhall Mews, Stanningley. Police launched a murder investigation after her body was found and Brooks was charged with her murder.Follow below for live updates from the sentencing.Mr Iqbal is addressing the judge to outline mitigating factors. The defence argues against the prosecution's argument that the murder was financially motivated and included sadistic conduct.
Mr Iqbal also argues that there is no evidence the attack on Kirstie was not pre-meditated before it began, though admits there was a level of pre-meditation during the attck itself. Mr Iqbal added that Brooks' previous convictions do not include extreme violence to this extent. The defence accepted Brooks is not entitled to full credit as he did not immediately plead guilty, but pointed out Brooks had made big admissions that would put him in a difficult position before a jury, so should be entitled to some credit.
Mr Iqbal said Brooks has written a letter apoogising for his actions, and submitted that the letter is an "honest and open" account. The defence submitted this shows an element of realisation on Brooks' part of the harm he has caused.
