With 'Falling for Christmas', Lindsay Lohan is trying to rehabilitate her image ✍️ But those sharp edges are what makes her shine 🟠 Philippa Snow
By rights, we ought to remember the young Lindsay Lohan for her turn in Mean Girls, in which she combined a casual relatability with the kind of individuating star presence rarely seen outside of classic Hollywood. Or from her earliest performance in, in which she convincingly played identical twins who had grown up on opposite sides of the Atlantic, swapping effortlessly between accents even when each character had to pretend to be her sibling.
Hints of that ability appear here, as when she directs a nervous minion to lift a glass of champagne up to her lips with little more than an impatient, petulant twitch of her chin, or when she echoes the audience’s feelings by appraising her uninspiring future love interest and then, almost comatose with disdain, asking him huskily: “And you are…?”
There is something of Barbara Stanwyck about Lindsay Lohan, both women capable of switching between comedienne and femme fatale without ever entirely sacrificing their sharp edges, perpetually exuding the air of having seen just a little too much to ever be fully innocent again.
