The Government’s plans to limit the number of foreign students entering the UK in a bid to reduce net immigration are “nonsensical” and show little more than “crude political thinking,” the chief executive of Universities UK has said

“They seem to want to go back to a target but they really obviously had great trouble with. Why go back to something that was an albatross around your neck? I don’t understand it,” said Ms Stern.

It comes after the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said on Thursday that Rishi Sunak was considering “all options” to reduce net immigration numbers, including clamping down on “student dependents and low-quality degrees”. Downing Street did not elaborate on what it meant by “low-quality degrees”.

“Indeed, international students make up over two thirds of UK education exports and will be critical to meeting the Government’s export strategy to increase education exports to £35bn by 2030.” “International students make a huge economic contribution to the UK by helping to fund vital research and supporting local economies. At UCL alone, the economic contribution to the UK generated by our international students amounts to £1.7bn a year.
