These aren’t sentiments you might expect to hear from an Olympian, but they are the ones Great British swimmer Rebecca Adlington used to announce the devastating loss of her baby, Harper, at 20 weeks old. My own aching heart goes out to Adlington and her husband, Andy. In June, my husband and I lost our daughter at 17 weeks. Adlington described going for her 20 week scan only to be told their baby had no heartbeat.
I looked to my husband, searching for any sign of hope, but he could only nod that yes, she was here, and cry. She was utterly beautiful, a perfect human in miniature. We kissed her, rocked her, talked to her, but we dared not take her tiny, delicate body out of her blanket-lined basket.
