Rishi Sunak already has the most difficult in-tray of any incoming PM in recent years, he may be wishing he could get on with the job without his predecessor-but-one breathing down his neck
to stand in last month’s leadership contest.
To be clear, there is no contest on the cards just yet. Mr Johnson would need to be cleared by the Commons privileges committee,, and Mr Sunak would need to have made little progress in the polls to claw back the deficit created by Liz Truss during her disastrous premiership, before MPs start calling for the ex-PM to stand again.
Mr Johnson would benefit from a possible rule change by the party, which would – if approved – allow votes of no confidence to count against new leaders after less than a year.
