Friday marks the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz

People across Greater Manchester will stand alongside our area’s thriving Jewish community to remember victims of genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day.

It comes as recently released census figures show the Jewish community in Greater Manchester has grown from 25,013 in 2011 to 28,075 in 2021, and now makes up 1.0% of the overall population. But some parts of Greater Manchester have truly flourishing Jewish communities. For example, more than half the population of Broughton Park in Salford is Jewish - 56.7% or 4,671 residents. That is the strongest Jewish community in all of England and Wales.

It shows that while the Jewish community remains a small part of England and Wales, it is thriving and continues to grow - more than 80 years after Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler launched his evil program of genocide. Holocaust Memorial Day has taken place in the UK since 2001, with a UK Commemorative Ceremony and thousands of local activities taking place all across the UK on or around January 27 each year.
