Christianity in UK drops below 50% - and it will fall again in the next census 🗣️ Christianity historian Alec Ryrie said “there’s every reason to think the fall in 2031 will be even sharper”

Christianity remained the most popular answer to the religion question, which is optional to answer, in the 2021 census for England and Wales.

. The number of people who said they had no religion rose from 27.5 per cent in 2001 to 36.7 per cent.According to analysis by, Scotland’s 2011 census figures, combined with the latest figures for England and Wales and Northern Ireland, means 47.6 per cent of the population in the UK identify as Christian.

It is believed that Christianity arrived in the year 597 with Augustine of Canterbury, who converted the Angles, before it spread around the country to become the dominant religion. After Henry VIII’s split from the Pope over his desire to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, the Church of England was founded.

“That made religions seem both unnecessary and, because they’re claiming universal truths and so at least implying that other people are wrong, a little bit offensive.”
