There are many places across the city known by more iconic names
Across Leeds, there are a number of different places which have official names, but are better known locally by other names.
From airports to city squares, there is plenty of local slang which might be confusing for an outsider. Leeds Bradford Airport is better known by many as something else, and Dortmund Square is often referred to by its most popular feature. There are some iconic features of the city which are known better by their unofficial names, such as the Dark Arches, than their real names, which in this case is Granary Wharfe. Some buildings are better known by previous occupants while others are known more for their appearance than their name.The Dalek/Bridgewater Place
Bridgewater Place is a tall skyscraper near the centre of Leeds, but locals have a more colloquial name for the structure. Owing to its appearance, its often referred to as 'The Dalek' by locals, named after the popular villain in Doctor Who.
