Vehicle enthusiasts who attended a car meet at a Leeds Retail park face prosecution, West Yorkshire Police has warned. It follows an event on Sunday at The Springs Retail Park in Colton in south east Leeds.

Such car meets are becoming very popular, with crowds meeting in designated areas with elaborately decorated, souped-up cars to show off to the spectators. The meetings often involve cars being driven along the roads, sometimes at speed.

They said: "A number of Notice of Intended Prosecutions have been sent to drivers and keepers following incidents of careless and inconsiderate driving. . . so those involved can expect them in the post this week, along with s.59 warnings." "Driving in a dangerous or careless manner is not acceptable and you will be prosecuted," officers warned.

Addressing the question of whether car meets were legal in the UK, the firm said: "It would usually depend on the circumstances surrounding the meeting, but if the behaviour of the group could be construed as antisocial, police have the power to arrest. For example, if those involved are performing stunts that could cause fear to the public, the police may be called."
