Lecturers and staff will walk out on Thursday and Friday this week
Lecturers at the University of Northampton will walk out on Thursday, November 24 as part of the largest strikes to ever hit UK universities. They come after employers imposed a pay rise worth only 3% earlier this year.
The strikes come after UCU members overwhelmingly voted 'yes' to industrial action in October in two national ballots over pay and working conditions as well as pension cuts. Despite the result, vice-chancellors have not made any improved offers to the lecturers' current below inflation pay. as well as Wednesday, November 30. The final strike day coincides with a national demonstration at King's Cross in London. Staff will also begin action short of a strike on Wednesday.
The UK university sector generated record income of £41.1bn last year with vice chancellors collectively earning an estimated £45million. UCU said the sector can more than afford to meet staff demands. "UCU members do not want to strike but are doing so to save the sector and win dignity at work. This dispute has the support of students because they know their learning conditions are our members' working conditions.
