Big plans for the Valley
Rossendale is a borough steeped in history and council planners have to balance new developments with preserving the traditional features abundant in market towns such as Haslingden and Rawtenstall.
One of the biggest planning stories currently is the redevelopment of Haslingden Market. Rossendale Borough Council has secured £300,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and added a further £200,000 of council money to invest in the market off Blackburn Road and wants residents to have their say about their vision for the project.
Almost 17 per cent of Weir's population are pensioners with Mr Wood arguing that the village is "chronically underserved by local facilities that are accessible for non-drivers". He hopes to provide the village's only retail shop aimed at those who are unable to drive to neighbouring towns. Elsewhere in Bacup the former Christ Church building on Beech Street is being brought back to life. The plans to turn it into a digital hub will see the building become a home for up to 12 businesses.
