Lancashire strikes back as crowds of anti-frackers gather before crunch council meeting

Chanting, huge yellow banners and anti fracking protesters descended on Preston’s County Hall this morning to let rip at the government ahead of a crunch meeting.

“Show us the science, because it isn’t there - it hasn’t changed. They tried to do it at Preston New Road and failed miserably and had to pack up and off they went with their tails between their legs…and they caused a lot of earthquakes. And there were numerous times that the wells were actually damaged so then you’re looking at leakage.”

Pete Howarth, of Brigantii Border Morris dancers, based in Preston, told us: “I walked around Lytham Hall admiring all the plaster work yesterday, and I can’t help thinking that earth tremors from fracking would cause a lot of damage to that and every other house in Lytham St Annes. It’s earthquakes, air pollution, potential water pollution, for nothing, and it isn’t going to reduce the price of gas, it won't get gas flowing quickly like Liz Truss says.

Adding that there was ‘no new evidence whatsoever to suggest that fracking has become safer,’ she said:: “Liz Truss is ignoring the climate crisis in every policy she puts forward, but it hasn’t gone away. Fracking for shale gas reduces the chance that the government will meet its own commitments to crack down on carbon emissions.

"Every single net zero compliant scenario from the Climate Change Committee shows that there is a gap between what can be produced in the North Sea and what the UK will demand out to 2050. It is a simple choice between natural gas imports and UK shale gas. Imports do not offer the benefits that a domestic shale gas industry offers, be that employment opportunities, tax revenue, community benefits, a lower carbon gas supply or energy security.
