On the streets of Lancashire where Jeremy Hunt's Autumn Statement was about as hot as a lukewarm cup of tea

Lancashire has given a less than warm welcome to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s long awaited crunch Autumn Budget in the House of Commons.

So, with all of this in mind, on a cold and dismal November afternoon and with Lancashire as damp as a sodden sponge, Lancs Live took to the streets to gauge people’s reactions and find out whether the ‘blow’ has, in their view, been softened. Eggs had shot up in price over the last six weeks, along with ‘just about everything’ he said, while he’d heard of layoffs at another nearby, long standing stall planned for January. “Even the prices of the eggs have gone up - they’re like gold dust - from £1.20 to £1.90 in the space of six weeks. It’s because people have stopped rearing hens because they can’t afford the grain, as it’s not coming from Ukraine.

Yet Darren Pugh, dad of three, has just taken over the reins at the town’s oldest chippy on Burscough Street. The 36-year-old, who plans on renaming Stafford’s Fish and Chip shop after his granddad, Ormskirk man and plumber Barrie Haughton, said: “The times are not great, but if I work hard at my business and do it right, as long as I’m not losing money, I can pay my staff and survive.”

Electric vehicles will have to pay Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2025, while there would be an extra £280 million of investment in the DWP to crackdown on benefit fraud and error in the coming two years. And the National Living Wage will increase by 9.7 per cent next year, Mr Hunt said, while social rent rises will be capped at a maximum of 7 per cent in 2023-24.
