Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows has described the findings of a shock report outlining how people with a disability are “at higher risk of sanctions” as “completely unacceptable”.

Shock figures show that sanctions have doubled since January 2020, and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau estimates that 53 per cent of all sanctions cases reported to them involve people who are disabled or have a long-term health condition. The North Lanarkshire MP says she fears that this is a result of a UK government “hostile environment” approach to vulnerable people claiming benefits.

“The report also highlights a DWP approach which is often ‘guilty until proven innocent’ in dealing with cases.“They do fantastic work in helping people fight these sanctions.
