Despite desperate attempts from passing walkers and helicopter crews, the man 'tragically did not survive'
Emergency services were called to Scafell Pike on Wednesday after the walker suffered a 'medical emergency'. Members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said they were alerted by both North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Police shortly before 4pm.
In a statement on Facebook, WMRT said: "We were called by both North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Police about a walker with symptoms of a medical emergency. An immediate callout was made and also requests for air support due to the position of the casualty high up on Scafell Pike. "Our thanks go to all agencies involved, and especially to the passing walkers. Our thoughts are with the walker’s family and friends, and all involved at this sad time."
Another said: "We were on the mountain yesterday and realised the seriousness of the situation. Having climbed the day before it was heart-breaking to know someone hadn’t come back down on their walk. The extensive efforts of all those who responded to the incident were noticeable and everyone we encountered on our way back to the car park was equally as saddened as we are.
