A by-election is taking place in Batley and Spen where Jo Cox was murdered in 2016.
activists supporting Jo Cox’s sister have been attacked with eggs and assaulted while campaigning for the Batley and Spen by-election.
An election was triggered when Labour’s MP for the area Tracy Brabin vacated the seat following her election as West Yorkshire mayor in May. Kim Leadbetter, Jo Cox’s sister, is standing for the Labour Party but faces a stern test against a resurgent Conservative party In a normal cycle, the election would be expected to be a tight run-off between Labour and the Tories – but the presence of Mr Galloway, an ex-Labour MP who makes a habit of running against the party in races with close media attention, had complicated the picture.
Three arrests were made when far-right activists descended on the area ahead of a planned appearance from Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – but he didn’t shop up condemned the ‘disgraceful’ abuse his party faced while campaigning on Friday.
