Liverpool have continued utilised an inverted full-back system so far this season but such a system hasn't been without its teething problems
With Virgil van Dijk suspended and both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate injury doubts, Joe Gomez could well retain his starting place for Liverpool’s trip to Wolves.
Admittedly, if selected to start, Gomez’s performance will have little impact on retaining his place in the long-term. When he could at least topple Joel Matip in the back-up pecking order, when Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Konate are all fit, all three surely start. Whether Gomez, who was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer and has seen his future be the subject of speculation over the past two seasons despite signing a new long-term contract last year, is willing to continue hanging around at Anfield waiting for such a vacancy remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Andy Robertson has never looked like a natural fit as a makeshift left-sided centre-back, having to sacrifice some of his natural attacking instincts to cover for Alexander-Arnold stepping into midfield. With the club’s summer transfer business now complete, it remains to be seen how Klopp intends his side to line up when everyone is fit and available. But Gomez could be a possible solution for the Reds if they revert to a more traditional inverted formation.
Meanwhile, at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta would use Oleksandr Zinchenko as an inverted left-back for most of last season, with centre-back Ben White complimenting him as a right-back moving into a defensive three. This set-up would return for the Gunners’ 3-1 victory over Manchester United before the international break.
