The royal family receive a lot of gifts from the general public during walkabouts and engagements but they do not have the power to decide what happens to any of the items they are gifted.

It's well known that the royal family must obey a series of strict rules and codes of conduct at all times whether that be attending events, adhering to specific protocol or arriving in a certain order.

However, as kind as these gestures are, there is a strict rule which means that any gift handed to the royals during a visit does not automatically belong to them, with the monarch having the power to decide what to do with it. These rules mean that anything that is handed over to them automatically belongs to the monarch and will not be the property of that family member unless they themselves ascend the throne.

The guidance says: "Official gifts are not the private property of the Member of The Royal Family who receives them but are instead received in an official capacity in the course of official duties in support of, and on behalf of The King."
