A “thoughtful and beautiful” Chorley man died when his moped crashed with a car at high speed.

Lewis Turner was travelling more than double the speed limit when he collided with a car driven by Ryan Youngs at a junction in New Longton last year. An inquest into the 20-year-old’s death took place at Preston Coroners Court today and heard that Mr Turner had no formal training to ride the moped.

However, Mr Colclough also said the evidence from CCTV footage indicated that Mr Turner was travelling at speeds of between 66-69mph, meaning he covered around 30 metres every second, and that he would still have been out of view if Mr Youngs had gone all the way to the stop line. Tragically, the two vehicles crashed at the junction and Mr Turner died from head and chest injuries. When asked by coroner Richard Taylor, PC Colclough explained that Mr Turner had an L-plate on his vehicle but that DVLA records showed he had no recorded training as legally required and also did not have insurance.

In a tribute released after his death, Mr Turner's family said: "Lewis was a kind, gentle, caring, thoughtful and beautiful boy with nothing but love to give. He brightened up everyone's day with just a cheeky smile and wanted nothing more than for other people around him to be happy.
