In his letter, Sir Keir writes that he is “acutely aware of the shocking rise in Islamophobic attacks that have been seen on too many British streets in recent days”. “We are also clear that the pain and suffering that has been unleashed is the responsibility of the terrorists of Hamas. Hamas are not the Palestinian people, and the Palestinian people are not Hamas.”
And the spokesman added that the letter to councillors was necessary because “we are giving councillors the respect of the chance to hear from the labour front bench and for us to set out our position, not least given how some of these issues can get edited on social media”.“We know this is an issue where people have strong feelings and that’s something that we completely respect,” the spokesman added.
