The overall policy on workers’ rights was also backed by all Labour’s affiliated unions other than Unite, who abstained on it at the NPF. “There’s an expectation among the electorate that Labour will deliver on its plans to strengthen workers rights during the early stages of being in government.” Meanwhile, a Unite spokesman said: “Unite simply won’t support policies without all the detail and understanding of the impact it will have on our members and workers more widely. These are negotiations that we will be fully involved with.

Ms Rayner said Labour’s plan “will be the biggest levelling-up of workers’ rights in decades” through a ban on zero-hours contacts, an end to “fire and rehire”, ensuring staff can get basic protections earlier, a boost to flexible working rights and a “genuine living wage”. A Labour source added: “With Keir and Rachel’s leadership, the Labour Party has transformed its relationship with business.
