👉 A Labour government will aim to abolish the House of Lords and bring about the “biggest transfer of power from Westminster” within its first years, Sir Keir Starmer has announced
Sir Keir did not commit to a timeframe but said it would happen as soon as possible and ideally within a first term.
“I think the last Labour government went further than any previous government down that road and I’d be surprised if there’s anybody that can make a halfway sensible argument for hereditary peers. So, of course, that needs to be done.”Mr Brown’s report suggested a Labour government could transfer 50,000 posts out of Whitehall to new regions, and claimed this would save at least £200m a year in the long term.
