Labour leaders have pointed to the chaos in the bond markets resulting from Liz Truss’s proposals to borrow more, and the fact that the tax burden is at a record peacetime high, as evidence that the party cannot make any more ambitious promises. 35 per cent of the 2,000 British adults polled said that if Labour wins the next election, it should “tax more and spend more on public services than the current Conservative Government do”. 11 per cent said it should tax and spend less, with 23 per cent backing the party’s current policy of spending roughly the same – while 31 per cent did not know.
In an interview over the weekend, the Leader of the Opposition said: “We will do nothing to increase the burden on working people, whether it comes to tax or anything else. They have paid a heavy price for the incompetence of the government after the last 13 years.”
