Breaking new from court

A knifeman has been convicted of attempted murder after he stabbed an unarmed cyclist in the head. A jury returned a majority verdict in the case of Amir Miran after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

Miran was found guilty of additional charges of having a bladed article, and assault, causing bodily harm, to a second man. Daniel Bishop, prosecuting, described the attempted murder as a "brutal and brazen knife attack" as he opened the case to the jury. The victim, Daniel Walicki, suffered injuries to his back, shoulder, and head on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in July last year. Miran and Wolska, of Colwick Road, Sneinton, denied all charges.

But according to the prosecution, Mr Walicki was unarmed and the incident happened after he had been stood with his push bike outside the Co-op, on the corner of Sneinton Dale and Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, when he was approached. Mr Walicki was taken by ambulance to hospital, where further medical investigation revealed just how severe this alleged attack had been. The jury heard CT scans showed serious internal injuries had been inflicted, which included a left-sided skull fracture underlying the stab wound.
