By positioning herself as a mouthpiece of ageism activism, she is taking oxygen and a voice away from a demographic – namely older women – who are already disenfranchised and erased because of their age.
But it does mean that certain demographics are not always included in that experience. We’re not considered to be voices of the zeitgeist because we don’t fit the description in terms of youth. Compounding this is unconscious bias, because in the west we are not taught to value the opinion of older women either. I find it completely baffling that when it comes to talking about dating and relationships, for instance, we don’t leverage the experience of older women more.
It is a long-standing joke that ideas are presented on TikTok as revolutionary thoughts, when the reality is that we are just seeing someone stumble across a concept for the first time despite the fact it may have existed in other cultures, or have been a known fact for aeons. It’s important to have women of all ages – particularly older women – speaking across a lot of subjects because of the amount of life wisdom that you accrue. Crucially, it also gives you a sense of perspective.
