with a surreal tall tale about a bloodbath over chicken giblets in Bromley’s Waitrose. After a break to study English at Oxford University, she had her Edinburgh fringe debut in 2006 with, a show that Chortle described as “utterly amateurish…this is a good thing”, disarming audiences with homemade badges, handwritten programmes, shambolic ukelele songs, and jokes about her supervillain persona Deceptive Shrimp.
Long feels frustrated that her diagnosis came late in her thirties, but she feels there were benefits to the delay, too. Some of the sheer random whimsy may have been edited out of her work over the years, but what hasn’t gone is Long’s essential warmth, heart, and earnestness. Added to that has been a rising political consciousness that’s made her one of the UK’s loudest left-wing voices – alongside Stewart Lee, who was an early champion of her work – in a comedy scene that often ducks away from controversy.
Her outspokenness hasn’t always made life easy. I ask if she’d ever follow a younger generation of comedians like Leo Reich onto TikTok and she’s repulsed: “The idea of f***ing editing a video makes me feel physically sick.” It’s a horror that goes deeper than technophobia.
