Joshua Molnar, now 21 but 17 at the time, says he acted in self-defence when he stabbed Yousef through the heart but he lied to police afterwards
The youth who killed Yousef Makki tearfully broke down at a new inquest into the 2019 death and admitted his actions after the fatal stabbing were 'pretty disgusting'.
The coroner told Molnar: “This must have been the most traumatic, dramatic moment in your young life. Many people would say that’s going to be frozen in memory and you remember every detail.” During the first inquest, Molnar was reminded he said he could not recall whether he or Yousef pulled out a knife first and that he punched Yousef.
Following an interjection from Lisa Judge, Molnar’s barrister, the coroner issued a warning to Molnar, telling the witness that he didn't have to answer the question if he believed the answer might incriminate him.Molnar, watched by his father at the back of court, replied: “I wasn’t lying. All I can say is I tried to explain it the best I can over multiple occasions. I can only put that down to an issue on my memory. But at no point was I trying to make it seem something.
Asked why he had not told the truth, Molnar said he hadn't taken everything in at the time ‘and my first thought was to lie’ and he ‘dug himself a hole’. Molnar replied: “I didn’t cook anything up. There was no conversation about agreements… There was no conferring about what was to be said.”
