There’s the leader of the Tippett Quartet and the director of the Britten Sinfonia among the first violins, a former BBC Young Musician of the Year leading the trombones, woodwind principals who make solo recordings… No wonder it sounds good.
In the Rachmaninov, Alim Beisembayev, the 25-year-old winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, stood in for the ailing Benjamin Grosvenor at two days’ notice with a winning mix of phlegmatic cool and complete virtuoso assurance. This concerto’s excessive fame supposedly comes from its movie associations, but the music itself is an all-out masterpiece of 1901, in spirit more.
