Ballymena United boss pleased with response of his players after Loughgall defeat
Jim Ervin was quick to praise the players from Ballymena United and Coleraine after a "crazy and surreal" League Cup encounter.
With the sides locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes it was on to penalties, but no-one could have predicted what was to unfold at The Showgrounds. It took a remarkable 44 penalties to separate the teams, the joint third longest ever shootout of all time, as the Bannsiders progressed 18-17.Although disappointed to exit the competition Ervin was full of admiration for both sets of players.
“The fact some players had to hit at least two penalties each says a lot about where it was tonight, as it was crazy and surreal," he said.“Fair play to both sets of players, especially the boys who missed the first time around, to step up and hit a second time meant there was a lot of pressure on you and on yourself to make the right from the first wrong.“We’re unfortunate to not progress but we’ll take the positives as it was a super performance.
“It’s not a nice way to lose, don’t get me wrong, but we asked for a reaction from Saturday and we’ve got that.“We got that response, we were unfortunate not to go through but that happens as penalty kicks are a lottery.Sign up to our f ree sports newsletter to get the latest headlines to your inbox
