“As far back as I was a schoolboy, I always wanted to be a gangster.” Previously worshipped as idols with ‘beautiful women and new cars’, Japan’s yakuza struggle to get credit cards and pay the bills after a series of crackdowns Niko Vorobyov reports:

“You can’t even pay your phone bill. Everyone’s walking around poor. Good luck renting an apartment or even a hotel. Our life is complicated.”

Takano grew up adopted, and the brotherhood of the yakuza filled in for his “real” family. He became a high-ranking capo in the“When I came out of prison I didn’t go back to the Yamaguchi family,” he said. “I guess I just decided to live a normal life. I was in a very good position in the Yamaguchi clan, and very good at my job, so they had to replace me when I left.”

With the police watching your every move and little room for career advancement, it’s no surprise the yakuza is no longer an enticing prospect for aspiring criminals. Still, organised crime in Japan is far from over. In recent years a new term has emerged in the media: the, or quasi-yakuza. While some are bikers and gang members unaffiliated with the official syndicates, many are the same yakuza as before who’ve simply decided to make life easier for themselves by resigning their formal membership.
