Jamie Shackleton has revealed their was one aspect of Leeds United's famous promotion performance at Derby County that took him by surprise - and it wasn't what happened afterwards, when Leeds were fined £20,000 for the use of pyrotechnics when celebrating their promotion to the Premier League as champions under Marcelo Bielsa on the pitch at Pride Park.
The FA said the scenes that followed the match, which Leeds United won 3-1 behind closed doors, broke the rule of behaving "in an orderly fashion". However, that's not what stands out to the 23-year-old midfielder when remembering that occasion. Leeds were promoted to the top flight for the first time in 16 years after results went in their favour ahead of the match. Huddersfield Town beating West Brom on Friday, July 17, meant Leeds were promoted. To make it even more memorable, Brentford losing to Stoke on the Saturday meant they were also handed the title in a weekend to remember.
Those results saw celebrations between staff and players go on long into the night at Elland Road, before dusting themselves off on the Sunday for the match at Derby. The late-night partying clearly didn't have too much of an effect on the players, which showed the fitness levels under Bielsa, because they were still able to produce a winning performance, which as Shackleton explains, throws the football handbook about preparation out of the window.
"We looked at the stats after, we ran the most we'd run all season in that game. The stats were through the roof. I just couldn't understand it. I managed to score - I wasn't feeling great, and I managed to score. I thought 'do I need to do this every week, or what?"
